Episode 16

Zeo Genesis Travelogues

Greetings, star-nomads! You can call me Trev. (You can also call me Trevallion Franklin-Ridgeway III, but I’d rather you didn’t). I’ve left behind my shallow executive existence to explore the Hundred Suns, to re-connect with insignificant voiders just like you. These are my travels. You’re welcome.

“When first spirited away by a courier for crimes I didn’t commit, I thought Mother had paid for me to go somewhere a little way out from Grav City. Some grav hamlet or grav thorpe. Alas, I’m somewhere vastly more tedious. You find me all the way over in Stib heliosphere; I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve slipped. This is Concord Four on planet Hawley, capital city on the capital planet of the multi-planet prefecture Hawley. Say that five times fast following a flask of Fawley.”

“Concord Four’s identical to where I grew up, the very place I was escaping. This is a Hegemony arcology, a city designed and built from the ground up, in one go, instead of naturally sprouting to its population’s will. Let’s walk, I’ll fill you in.”

“These gleaming, interconnected tubes above? Every window is a room in those residential cylinders. Each ‘resinder’ has internal gravity, grounded towards their cores, maximizing space and guaranteeing everyone a balcony.”

“Minimal waste, maximum cohesion. There aren’t even discernable social strata. A lowly builder is regarded the same as a ’sphere-trotting superstar. Where’s the class conflict? The daily drama?”

“Even the layouts are the same in these template tech-towns, which is how I know where to go for the little bit of spice a bland dish like Conbored Bore offers. Yes, waste is minimal, but everywhere has dregs and they tend to collect in the hard-to-reach places.”

“Here we are. Hello, fellow gamblers! What’re you playing there? Sidewalk slingrail? No, wait—get your hands—unff! That’s my—”

“…”

“Well, I’m alive, thanks to this wonderful woman, Olive. ‘Overgrowth’ Olive they call her, here at Pelker’s Pub. She was passing in her construction zeo and noticed my extremely enthusiastic mugging. You can imagine who won that fight. Won’t shut up about some supposed weird region called ‘Overgrowth,’ but I’m fascinated even after days spent trying to ignore Maybrick’s ‘recollections.’ She claims her forearm device is some experimental tech, the only other thing which survived her expedition. Which means I want it. Excuse me? Does Pelker’s have slingrail?”

“As always, victory is mine! Right, how do I turn this...wait, what do you mean it’s broken?”
