Episode 25

Zeo Genesis Travelogues

Greetings, star-nomads! You can call me Trev. (You can also call me Trevallion Franklin-Ridgeway III, but I’d rather you didn’t). I’ve left behind my shallow executive existence to explore the Hundred Suns, to re-connect with insignificant voiders just like you. These are my travels. You’re welcome.

“‘Out of the frying pan and into the fire’ seems entirely the wrong element for oceanic Ceto. Although, after escaping a society of ‘Phibs,’ humans modified for underwater life, my sub did, however, emerge under fire.”

“I suppose it’s mine now...can’t see deceptive Dan showing his face again.”

“Following two days' travel from Sinope arco-sphere to find the sunken city of Minthe, the closest surface sphere is now Aegina.”

“Dashing as I am, after near-butchery at the fins of foul fish folk, it would’ve been nice to arrive somewhere not being bombarded by a state-of-the-art battleship. As I surfaced at the wrecked dock amid the debris of ships and booms of artillery, I sinkingly realised this wasn’t going to be the haven I needed.”

“Flagship of Aegina’s Vakarchuk Navy, the Braznov, according to Newsflow, had been refitted to be the fleet’s most advanced and powerful vessel. The Vakarchuk were nautilongs away, deployed to the Unready Strait stand-off, with the Braznov due to join them. One of the things it’d been fitted with was a ‘M.A.C.S.’, allowing autonomous self-defence in extremis. As if in one of Dan’s schlocky 2Ds, M.A.C.S. had violently turned on its creators.”

“The Krezvitz Square public holos showed Aegina’s combat aqua-zeos battling to stop the Braznov, but nothing they carried could make a dent. Close-in weapon systems were handily holding off the aqua-zeos, but their agility kept them safe, appearing to skate on the water. Good for the pilots, but for the bombarded citizenry, they might’ve well not been there.”

“A panicked copper had noticed my arrival in what was now the arco-sphere’s only working vessel. Well, who was I to refuse aid to a city whose collapse would certainly kill me?”

“Before long we were stealthily speeding beneath the surface battle. Our cargo? A top-of-the-line electronic warfare ‘remora’ operative. Her mission: clamp onto the Braznov’s hull and reprogram the beast.”

“Try as Remmy might, the M.A.C.S. stymied her every attempt to deactivate the Braznov. She could, however, confuse its aiming systems, and with admiralty’s approval, she redesignated the ship’s own deck as the target.”

“I wasn’t hanging about. I made sure we were already scarpering as the Braznov’s mighty guns swivelled inwards and down before blasting itself to the bottom of the ocean.”

“Stay zippy, star-nomads…”
