Episode 46

Zeo Genesis Travelogues

Greetings, star-nomads! You can call me Trev. (You can also call me Trevallion Franklin-Ridgeway III, but I’d rather you didn’t). I’ve left behind my shallow executive existence to explore the Hundred Suns, to re-connect with insignificant voiders just like you. These are my travels. You’re welcome.

“Back in my assigned quarters now, listeners, with all its much-too-large furniture. Quite an experience, today, though one that’s left me down. Some pleasant pirates and I absconded with father’s ship and its crew, True Worth. Together we traversed the mysteriously-disappeared-then-reappeared Periphery slipway. Promptly True Worth was captured by this massive orgh ship, Vuexuun. My ‘caretaker’ here is Wuun, a gazeki, an agreeable six-limbed monkey-bird. Let me catch you up.”

“Wuun had led me to the technocrat creature Humb... I-call-it-Hubert’s’s... residence, in hopes of removing the now-confirmed partially-orgh-tech—orghmented, you might say—z-link from my forearm. It couldn’t, but I took the opportunity to ask if this new creature’s people were a full part of orgh society. Hubert politely explained that technocrats are orgh, sharing common ancestry with the other reptilians I’d seen. The highly intelligent technocrats began to evolve about eight human centuries ago from populations raised far from core orghworlds, developing completely outside their traditional ‘prismantic’ practices.”

“Excited, Wuun was keen to show me this prismancy in action. Scuttling down the vast, strangely-arranged corridors, it told me its breed consider the imposing Neophids and Antarchs their protectors. Wuun spoke sadly of its significantly more vulnerable species and their planets being attacked by an irresistible, malignant force. The gazeki who volunteered to travel with the orgh in their starships gratefully serve their masters in exchange for protection. Still, Wuun admitted it feels a deep, persistent guilt for not being with its kin on the gazeki homeworld, Ead Sig-æthel, in their darkest hour.”

“Wuun cheered up again upon our arrival at a massive gantry overlooking a cavernous training hall. Below us, several rows of these hulking ‘warbloods’ rigorously trained with stunning, multi-hued, crystal-bladed weapons. To my eye they resembled ancient swords and polearms. To my astonishment, some of these giants launched blindingly bright energy blazes from them with a rapid slash. Their martial prowess was profoundly impressive, and I can see why the gazeki place high value on warblood protection.”

“I instantly regretted it, but I asked if such orgh warriors are currently stationed on Ead Sig-æthel to repel another attack if necessary. Wuun’s mood plummeted again as it heavily told me that nearly all its species were brutally slaughtered in those planetary attacks. The spaceborne survivors are tragically all that remain.”

“Tomorrow, I will endeavour to do something nice for it.”

“Stay zippy, star-nomads…”
