Episode 22

Zeo Genesis Travelogues

Greetings, star-nomads! You can call me Trev. (You can also call me Trevallion Franklin-Ridgeway III, but I’d rather you didn’t). I’ve left behind my shallow executive existence to explore the Hundred Suns, to re-connect with insignificant voiders just like you. These are my travels. You’re welcome.

“Place: Deino. Time: twenty-five hundred. Reason: justice! According to this Cetoan moon, anyway.”

“I made it off Alu after being shot down by self-governing railcannons thanks to help from the friendly refugees. My repaired ship’s comms have been a little… modified, and I picked up the publicization of this historic event. Today I will witness the public execution of Premier Ossymandius Spurr. Weird atmosphere, very tense, almost tangible. Even more so for me because a chrome ship I couldn’t identify followed my course a little too closely. And now, I believe, a suspicious fellow in silvery clothes follows me. I’ve made a local friend to give me cover, but it turns out Lily is quite a conspiricist. She believes Silvery belongs to a secret society, watching over and influencing Deino from hiding. Hardly helps my nerves! She’s very enjoyable, though, despite her weirdness. Or perhaps because of.”

“That officious building is the Seat of Power. Spurr gained his through disinformation warfare, fraud, bribery, and more. Brought his state to the brink of civil war to instigate a dictatorship. Rioting, the language of the unheard, spread like wildfire, until only the decapitation of Ossymandius would settle things. Symbolically, they’re using a brutal contraption based on ancient mythological designs, linked to sagas of commoners overthrowing corrupt nobility.”

“Lily’s now showing me her ‘evidence’ that these silver-clad sinisters actually helped expose Spurr. Ostensibly long-standing members of government and other institutions who wrested back power at the crucial moment didn’t, apparently, exist, until shortly before their intervention. I can’t lie, it does seem convincing… They, Lily claims, watch from their starborne fleet and’ve intervened to prevent wars previously.”

“Oh gods, what’s this? Groups of Spurr loyalists, Red Tops, barging their way through the crowd, towards the execution podium. They’re his fanatics…Cultists, really, in their distinctive red shirts. Watch yourself Lily, they’re coming our way and they’re packing. Heat, packing hea—Guns, woman! They’ve got—Hit the deck!”

“Wow, what was that bang? Whoah! One of them just dropped between us and he ain’t getting up. Lily, you alright? Well, you can stay...frozen...down there, but I’m getting up. Bloody Schnupps, I think they’re all down. Simultaneously. In the same way. That one gunshot was actually probably thirty at the same time! Who on earth could manage that? And is this going to spoil all the festivities?”

“Stay zippy, star-nomads…”
